Anyone interested in working with natural dyes, the symbolism of trees and the colours hidden within them.
Workshop Tutor
Abby Springham is a graduate of Costume Design and a self-taught cook. After working in film and television, with credits including The Crown and Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, she left the industry to volunteer at Flourish, a regenerative farm in Cambridgeshire, where she discovered a curiosity about soil health and the importance of reconnecting with nature.
Since then, her work has taken her around the world, collaborating with artists, yoga retreats and guesthouses, while her own creative practice has evolved through natural dyes. Abby is passionate about creating spaces where people can connect with nature, creativity and themselves.
Overview
On arrival, guests will be welcomed with a guided walk around the farm, where they will identify and connect with the tree allocated to them for the workshop. The symbolism of each tree will be explored, bringing to light their unique qualities and an understanding of the hidden networks through which trees communicate and support one another beneath the soil.
Leaves and bark will then be gathered before, as a group, preparing a natural dye bath. Guests will learn how to mordant fabric in preparation for dying and modifying colours, leaving with an array of colour samples and a closer connection to the beautiful community and environment that surrounds.
To finish, we will gather around the table for a lunch prepared with vegetables from the farm. YOU WILL LEARN:
• The symbolism of specific trees around the grounds of Haymans Farm
• How to prepare natural fibre for dyeing
• How to prepare a dye bath for plant material
• How to modify colours
• How to create 4 different colours from a singular dye bath WHAT YOU WILL CREATE:
• A series of dye swatches from the trees at Haymans Farm
• Personal dye journal
• A naturally dyed accessory to take home
• A napkin symbolising a token of connection to community
